MEMBEAM
Alyssa Benedetto/Six to Six Magnet School Membeam is a differentiated vocabulary program that meets students where they are and uses pathways for growing their vocabulary to different levels. Our 5ht-8th grade students will be able to work at school and at home to practice and grow their vocabulary skills that are crucial for helping them comprehend morphologically complex words within grade level text while also making use of those words in their spoken and written expressions of thought. |
CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINERS
Debra Cardarelli & Jimmy Carter/Developmental Learning Center Funds were used to purchase training for two Certified Personal Trainers (CPTs) within the Physical Therapy department for C.E.S. Special Education Programs. The ultimate goals of this project are to increase safety and student competency with fitness routines to build healthy habits and ameliorate physical health risk factors associated with ASD and emotional disabilities. |
THE CRAFTY CLUB
Jennifer Coffield/Six to Six Magnet Schools This project is an extension of the future Kid Quick Cook Club. This project has provided students the opportunity to engage in mindful craft creations that help them balance life and their school day. It has helped them engage in and practice basic match measurements and calculations. They have been able to read and understand simple ingredients and food labels. |
USING EARLY CHILDHOOD ENVIRONMENTAL RATING SCALE TO IMPROVE THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT IN THE CLASSROOM
Marilyn Della Rocco & Lauren Faugno/Six to Six Magnet School Funds were used to provide each classroom with furniture that will increase the maneuverability of the children and staff around the room and provide them with child-sized developmentally appropriate furnishings. The furniture change has improved the emotional climate of the classroom and made the room easier to traverse. |
BECOMING A MASTERMIND OF CODING
Gretchen DiStefano/Six to Six Magnet School Mastermind is an easy to learn and fast to play game with more than 2,000 possible codes. Our 3rd graders have been challenged to break their partner's code in 10 moves or less or create a code that cannot be broken. This game is a fun introduction to coding and programming. |
NEWSELA ESSENTIALS
Angela Duva/Six to Six Magnet School The world around our students is full of wonder and mystery. Newsela Essentials provides our 3rd - 8th grade students access to real-world non-fiction short text that broadens their horizons of our world. It has provided our ELA, Science and Social Studies teachers access to thousands of news and current event articles aligned with our curriculum. |
ALL LIVING THINGS TAKE 2
Meghan Esteva/Six to Six Magnet School Our 3rd grade students will visit the Beardsley Zoo and the Kellogg Environmental Center to collect data on living things. They will be led by educators from Beardsley Zoo and from CT Deep. These students will have the experience to consider being citizen scientists. |
THE GET READY PROJECT
Karli Kibby/Therapeutic Day Program Students in the Therapeutic Day Program will participate in the Get Ready program which includes yoga sequences and mindfulness techniques that will assist them in improving their focus as well as their emotional and behavioral self-regulation. This will result in students being more available for classroom learning and improve their attentiveness to academic curriculum. |
PROMOTING COLLABORATIVE CONVERSATIONS
Michelle Lindy/Therapeutic Day Program (TDP) The TDP program at C.E.S. supports students with a range of difficulties in the area of emotional, behavioral, social and academic functioning. Students with these difficulties would benefit from the implementation of the collaborative academic conversation curriculum. This will serve to remediate weakness in the areas of fundamentals of how to engage in collaborative conversations (eg. using mental state verbs, asking questions that build on the idea of others and making relevant comments.) |
THE SCIENCE OF READING IN ACTION PART 2
Lori Murchison-Chevrin/Therapeutic Day Program (TDP) Research in the science of reading has shown that beginning readers should not be reading leveled texts that force them to guess at unfamiliar words, because this leads to the development of bad reading habits. This grant will provide quality decodable texts for our K-2 students as well as our struggling readers in grades 3-12. |
BASKETBALL TEAM
Catherine Nguyen-Ho/Six to Six Magnet School Six to Six is reviving the basketball team for grades 5-8. There will be a girls team and boys team. They will scrimmage with schools from the communities our students are from. Students will learn the rules of basketball and will have the opportunity to learn basic to more advanced basketball skills. It will help develop a sense of camaraderie, verbal and non-verbal communication, cooperation and team-building. |
LENDING LIBRARY FOR COOPERATIVE GAMES AND ACTIVITIES TO INCREASE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Robyn Johnson/Therapeutic Day Program (TDP) Funds are used to purchase a lending library for cooperative games and activities to increase social and emotional learning opportunities that will help keep students engaged and excited to practice social and emotional skills. |
3D PRINTING TO SUPPORT ACCESS FOR AUGMENTATIVE AND ALTERNATE COMMUNICATION
Virginia Porto/Special Education Many students with impaired language skills rely on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to communicate and interact with the world around them. Funds will be used to provide some of the tools needed by creating tailor-made keyboards with the use of a 3D printer allowing the students to become successful and independent communicators. |
ENHANCING LEARNING ENGAGEMENT THROUGH HANDS-ON APPROACH
Maricruz Serrano/School Readiness Funds were used to purchase Montessori-inspired mats that will help the children develop social skills, relationships, and respect. The manipulative materials will help support children to develop positive hands-on play and positive social interactions. |
TRIAL VESTS
Jennifer Taylor Rossel/Special Education This project is a time efficient method by which the occupational therapists can determine the correct type and size of a combination of pressure/weighted vests or weighted vests needed for a student in the Special Education program. Having sample sizes of the weighted and combination vests available will enable occupational therapists to provide a potential solution to a student's self-regulation difficulties in a shorter amount of time, thereby reducing maladaptive behaviors. |
BARRIER BREAKDOWN
Olivia Zilinyi/Special Education Barrier Breakdown is a project targeting the improvement of special education students to communicate more effectively using their dominant modality through their use of facilitated supports such as AAC charging options, tablet carrying straps, and portable voice amplifiers. |

THINKING CLASSROOMS
Dr. Luke Forshaw/Professional Development Services Funds were used to purchase 8 mobile VNPS boards for deployment in C.E.S. workshop spaces. According to Peter Lilijedah's research on "Building Thinking Classrooms," the Vertical Non-Permanent (VNPS) surfaces have been validated to promote increased agency in learning along with collaborative-constructive meaning making. |
RCA LIGHTING
Eric Nyquist/Regional Center for the Arts Funds were used to purchase a working stage lighting system. The new lighting console has allowed the RCA program to present professional quality shows in musical theatre, theatre, music, and dance but also the technical theatre students to work with an industry-standard lighting console. |
WORKSPACE PARTNERSHIP
Emma Balter/Six to Six Magnet School This grant will allow the middle school students first hand experiences by means of an alternate educational format through a variety of modalities including but not limited to cooking, 3D printing, coding, soldering, wood work, and theatre as well as other focal areas. |
BRIDGING SUCCESS
Kristin Magazine/Transitional Learning Center (TLC) Our project, “Bridging SucCESs”, aims to create an inclusive and empowering environment for our students. We envision a school store that will provide hands-on learning experiences and skill development opportunities for these students. This project allows our students to learn practical life and vocational skills, prepare them for independent living, and promote a positive culture within our school community. |
